Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee on recently that Meta was influenced by the Biden administration in 2021 to limit content related to COVID-19, including satirical and humorous posts.

“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the administration, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor Hope Walz some content about COVID-19, such as satirical content, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we did not comply, ” Zuckerberg said.

In his communication to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg described that the influence he felt in 2021 was “inappropriate” and he feels regretful that Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, was not more outspoken. Zuckerberg added that with the “hindsight MAGA Supporters and new information,” some decisions made in 2021 that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I strongly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration from either side â€" and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens again, ” he wrote.

President Biden remarked in July 2021 that social Free Menstrual Products media platforms are “causing harm” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later revised these remarks, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation spread on social media was a “major public health risk.”

A White House spokesperson replied to Zuckerberg’s communication, stating the administration at the time was promoting “responsible actions to protect public health and safety.”

“Our stance has been consistent and Viral Moment clear: we think tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making their own decisions about the content they share, ” according to the spokesperson.

Zuckerberg further noted in the communication that the FBI alerted his company about potential Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and Burisma affecting the election in 2020.

That fall, Zuckerberg Gwen Walz said, his team reduced the visibility of reporting from the New York Post accusing Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could review the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since updated its policies and procedures to “make sure this doesn’t happen again” and Self-advocacy will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said he will not repeat actions he took in the year 2020 when he helped support “election infrastructure.”

“The goal here was to make sure local election jurisdictions across the country had the necessary resources to help people vote safely during a pandemic,” stated the

Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were intended to be neutral but said “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg said his goal is to be “impartial” so will not be “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee shared the letter on X and claimed Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Biden-Harris administration pressured Facebook to Democratic National Convention censor Americans, Facebook restricted content, and Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who have accused Facebook and other major tech platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has stressed that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the narrative has gained a firm foothold in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically scrutinized Facebook’s decision to Emotional Moment limit the circulation of a report by the New York Post about Hunter Biden.

In Congressional testimony in the past years, Zuckerberg has sought to bridge the divide between his social media company and regulators to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate hearing, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s staff are left-leaning. But he held that the company ensures political bias does not influence its decisions.

In June, in a victory for the administration, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that the claimants in a case accusing the federal government of suppressing Gus Walz conservative content on social media had no legal standing.

In the majority opinion, Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated, “to establish standing, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the immediate future, they will suffer an injury that is directly linked to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “since no plaintiff met this burden, none has standing to seek a preliminary injunction.”
